Condition: Shingles
A virus, Varicella zoster, which causes chickenpox, also causes shingles. Once you have had chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in your body. Certain triggers, such as stress, immune deficiency from AIDS, chemotherapy or radiation and certain cancers can reactivate the virus resulting in an outbreak of shingles. Approximately 10-20% of the population will experience shingles at some point in their life. It is most common in adults over the age of sixty and those who contracted chickenpox before the age of one. Given an aging population, it is theorized that over half of the population eighty years of age or older will contract shingles. Shingles is medically termed Herpes zoster however it is not the same as the herpes virus that causes mouth sores or genital herpes.
Shingles begins with sensitivity or shooting pain along a nerve usually on one side of the face, neck or torso followed by the development of a rash. The rash is characterized by small red patches that blister. The rash spreads for approximately four days before the blisters will pop and ooze, forming small sores that will then crust and eventually heal. Shingles is contagious until the blisters have crusted. Shingles can be characterized by pain with no appearance of a rash. However, if a rash does develop, taking a wellness approach can help speed the healing of the blisters and prevent scar tissue from forming.
